The seller rushes the sale
Pressure to leave a deposit, skip checks or decide immediately removes your chance to verify the car. A genuine seller should allow reasonable questions and an independent inspection.

USED-CAR BUYING GUIDE
A clean advert and a short drive do not prove a vehicle is sound. These warning signs can reveal hidden risk before you hand over a deposit or complete the purchase.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
One concern may have a straightforward explanation. Several concerns together should change how you assess the car, the price and whether to proceed.
01
Pressure to leave a deposit, skip checks or decide immediately removes your chance to verify the car. A genuine seller should allow reasonable questions and an independent inspection.
02
Check the registration, VIN, V5C, service records and MOT history. Dates, mileages and ownership explanations should tell one consistent story.
03
Compare recorded mileage with MOT history and wear on the steering wheel, pedals, driver's seat and controls. Unexplained inconsistencies need investigation.
04
A warm engine can hide cold-start smoke, rattles, poor idle or warning lights. Ask the seller not to start the vehicle before the inspection where possible.
05
Confirm the relevant dashboard lights illuminate with the ignition and then go out correctly. Do not accept an unexplained warning as "just a sensor" without evidence.
06
Uneven gaps, overspray, different paint texture, filler and disturbed fixings can indicate previous repair work. The quality and extent of that work matter.
07
Oil or coolant leaks, persistent exhaust smoke, knocking, rattling or whining may point to expensive faults and should not be ignored.
08
Uneven wear can result from poor alignment, damaged suspension or previous impact. It may also mean immediate tyre and geometry costs.
09
The car should steer, brake and change gear predictably. Watch for pulling, vibration, clutch slip, harsh automatic shifts and clunks over bumps.
10
A refusal does not prove the vehicle is faulty, but it removes an important safeguard. Be prepared to walk away rather than accept unnecessary risk.
WHEN A PROFESSIONAL CHECK HELPS
A pre-purchase vehicle inspection is especially valuable for an expensive, complex or long-distance purchase, when you cannot view the car yourself, or when the history and condition raise questions. We work for the buyer—not the seller—and explain the findings clearly.
